Leonardo DiCaprio Month #3: Inception, Body of Lies

INCEPTION
REVIEW
The plot of the movie revolves around a thief, Dom Cobb played by Leonardo DiCaprio who has a rare ability to enter people’s dream and steal their secrets from their subconscious mind. This skill puts Dom in a lot of demand in the world of corporate espionage but it also costs him everything he loves. Dom gets a chance to payoff when is offered an impossible looking task of planting an idea in someone’s mind. If he is successful it will be a perfect crime, but a dangerous enemy is anticipating his every move.

Along with Leonardo DiCaprio, the movie also casts Tom Hardy as Eames, Ellen Page as ariadne, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Arthur, Marion Cottilard as Mal, Cillian Murphy as Fischer and others. The movie is directed by one of the most gifted directors of Hollywood: Christopher Nolan.

It is said that director Christopher Nolan spent ten years writing the screenplay for this movie. Having said that the movie is a brilliant example of film making that puts its viewer on the edge of their seats literally. I remember when I was watching the movie I did not talk or move even for a second because the movie was so griping and shifting your attention to something else even for a second would leave you lost and disoriented. The movie is often described by critics as ” a film that rewards the intellect ” and director Christopher Nolan does exactly that; he forces the viewer to keep up with the movie and he rewards the one who does that with a breath taking spectacular. The actors of the movie do a brilliant job in portraying their roles. While the film may seem simple at its outset, Inception is a highly complex film which delves deep in to the human subconscious mind. This is a highly recommended movie that often features on the top 10 best movies of the decade. I give the 4 and half out of five stars.

BODY OF LIES
REVIEW

This is a movie about a CIA agent Roger Ferris played by Leonardo DiCaprio who devises a bold and dangerous plan to capture terrorist Al-Saleem with the help of his Ed Hoff played by Russel Crowe who is a expert in deception. Ferris creates a fake terrorist organisation to bring Al-Saleem out of his hiding. Meanwhile, he also has to keep this a secret from Jordanian intelligence head, Hani. Because if Hani finds out Ferris will lose his life.

The cast of the film also include Goldshifteh Farahani as Aisha, Mark Strong as Hani, Oscar Issac as Bassam, Alon Atulbul as Al-Saleem, Vince Colosimo as Skip and others. The movie is directed by legendary director Ridley Scott.

One thing that film maker Ridley Scott always does in his films is that he grounds the film very close to reality; he sets a mood which makes getting into his movies very easy for the audiences. Body of Lies is no exception to this. The movie is based on the novel by David Ignatius with the same title. The movie is kind of conventional in its storyline revolving around the CIA and the middle eastern politics. The film relies heavily on the performance of the actors Russel Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio to elevate it beyond the conventional espionage thriller. The film packs a lot of action as our hero, the lone ranger operates in three countries, survives explosions and brutal torture and falls into love with a local beauty. The movie works very hard to make it all work but the poor adaptation does no good to it. The movie is however a good watch for fans of Leonardo DiCaprio like me because of his performance. I give this movie 3 out of 5 stars
