As a big fan of Max Payne series, I went to see the 2008 “Max Payne” movie which featured Mark Wahlberg in a main role. I went well knowing that movies based on video games usually don’t come out as good as we’d want them to. The storyline centers on a troubled police detective (played by Mark Wahlberg) whose wife and child were murdered by drugged thugs some three years prior to the action of the movie. Unable to part with the past, Max is obsessed with trying to find the murderer who escaped, only to find out that the reasons for his tragedy delve much deeper.
Besides Max, the prominent role in the movie is given to Mona (played by Mila Kunis), whose own personal tragedy led her to Max. Movie was directed by John Moore, who was handed the difficult task to satisfy both the game, and action movie fans alike.
If I had to put verdict on the movie, I would say that it was decent, not great. Don’t get me wrong here, I still think that it is one of the best movies based on a video game, but there are certain plot decisions I found predictable to say the least. With that being said, the atmosphere that the movie breathes with is top notch, thanks to the hallucinations, snow-dominated screens, and Wahlberg’s voice which was suited perfectly for the role. If you decide to see the movie, do so for the right reasons: good acting, quality screenplay or action scenes packed with intense atmosphere. If you do so, you’ll be rewarded.
Now we should proceed on a lighter note. The Second movie I’d like to talk about is the hilarious action comedy – “The Other Guys”. It is a story about two detectives, Terry Hoitz and Allen Gamble, who are destined to a life of filling out the paperwork for the other, cocky pair of detectives. When they decide to say enough to the desk-work, our two cops (one played by Mark Wahlberg, the other by Will Ferrell) set out on a hilarious spree of shooting and chasing throughout NY.
The director Adam McKay, who has a long history of filming comedies in cooperation with Will Ferrell, is a co-writer of the movie as well. “The Other Guys” also features Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson as the two hotshot detectives. There is one other star appearance (Allen Gamble’s wife) in the movie I don’t want to spoil to you.
What are my thoughts on the movie? First of all, it represents a real spring rain in the flood of overly clichéd action comedies. It is not perfect though, but talented cast (who wouldn’t want to see Mark Wahlberg, Will Ferrell, Samuel L. Jackson, and Dwayne Johnson in one movie?!), hilarious action scenes and funny writing together make up for a really good comedy. And this one is good. I state that because I believe that there is only one condition a comedy ought to fulfill even if it fails in all the others, and that is to make us laugh. This movie has successfully managed that.
