Brad Pitt Month #1: Inglorious Basterds, World War Z

Inglorious Basterds

Inglorious Basterds is a World War Two epic with a twist. Brad Pitt plays Lt. Aldo Raine, the leader of a group known as “The Basterds”, whose main mission is to fight and kill the Nazis that are currently invading France. Quentin Tarantino wrote and directed this movie in 2009 and therefore the movie has all the crazy plot twists that only a Tarantino film can promise. The movie also stars Melanie Laurent, Christoph Walts and Eli Roth as well as a whole host of extremely talented actors. Inglorious Basterds is certainly not what you would call a classic World War Two movie, despite the setting. Yes, it is set in the midst of World War Two, but it takes a completely different look at the War. I loved the movie and was excited when I found out that it was based on true events. This is a factor of the War that so many people, including myself had never known about. The idea that there was a group of Jewish-American men, who’s sole intention was to put fear into Nazis that were terrorizing Jews all over the world is not only a great movie plot, but also a very interesting fact. Inglorious Basterds is exciting from start to finish. The movie is full of twists and turns. I liked how Brad Pitt and his followers were extremely likeable despite the fact that they continue to commit violent acts. Inglorious Basterds is not only one of Tarantino’s finest films to date, but also one of Brad Pitt’s most outstanding performances. He continues to prove his talents as an actor, as the plot of the movie unfolds.

World War Z

World War Z is an exciting movie, which takes a realistic yet exciting look at our world under the threat of destruction from a zombie apocalypse. Brad Pitt plays the character of family man Gerry Lane, who as a United Nations employee is given the responsibility of helping save all of humanity. The film is directed by Marc Forster and mainly set in the US, however is interestingly filmed all over the world. The cast includes Mireille Inos, James Badge Dale and Mathew Fox as well as many other talented actors. One of the most noticeable features about Pitt’s body of work is the fact that he is willing to work with actors who are talented even if they are not the most famous. Working alongside a great like Brad Pitt can produce amazing performances from less experienced actors and this is witnessed in World War Z. One of the most important elements for me when watching this movie was the setting. As a Glasgow native, I was more than excited to see the streets of my hometown being flooded with zombies. The director’s choice to film the movie in many different locations is key for the success of this movie, as it not only brings in audiences from all over the world, but it shows that Forster was adamant on getting the right look for each scene. The plot itself was interesting to me, as truthfully zombie movies do not usually entertain me, however World War Z definitely did. The lifelike look at our world under such an intense zombie invasion was as frightening as it was intense. The movie had me on the edge of my seat the whole way through. One of my favorite aspects of the movie was Brads Pitt’s portrayal of the protagonist. Seeing such a strong character that is also a loving family man, gives the movie a depth that a lot of similar movies simply do not have. Overall, I loved World War Z and felt it was one of Brad Pitt’s strongest performances.
